And finally the design of the toy is also important. It’s always tempting to buys the toys that are a little bit cheaper, but it is more likely that the toy won’t last as long as a well built toy using better materials. Not only should we aim for the toys that we buy to be long-lasting, but also easy to clean. Children have a good habit of getting huge amounts of dirt and grit on their toys, so to be able to quickly wipe them down is an added bonus.

Also in the design we need to look at if the toy is overly-complicated. Simple toys often provide a chance for your child to use their imagination more. Well designed toys will also still be able to be used as your child grows older and have different uses.

There is another consideration to bear in mind when buying a toy, and that is the reason why you want to buy it: do you want your child to enjoy and explore his/her imagination? Do you want them to learn something in particular while they play? Or you may be checking that all their senses (eye sight, hearing, smell…) are within normal levels, especially when they are toddlers.

Through the use of toys, you may detect that your child has difficulty recognizing different colours, or doesn’t react to different sounds. If you think that you child might be deficient in one of the senses, be sure to take them to the doctors for testing. It is much better to find out if your child has a limited sense early so that you can cater for their special needs.
